Does a baby need to wear sunglasses?
Babies’ and children’s eyes need special protection from harmful sunlight on hot and sunny summer days, because their eye protection ability is low: a child’s pupils are wider, the lens is crystal clear, and they tend to look upwards more than adults. Children are at a higher risk of sun-induced eye damage.
Do ordinary dark lenses protect babies’ eyes as well?
It is not the darkness of the lenses but UV protection that shields the eyes from the sun. Sunglasses with dark but non-UV-protective lenses can be very dangerous, since the natural protective reactions of the eyes—squinting and pupil contraction—don’t activate with a dark lens. As a result, significantly more UV rays reach the eyes than if the child were not wearing sunglasses at all.
