Should babies wear sunglasses?
The eyes of babies and children must be particularly protected from harmful sunlight on hot sunny summer days because their eyes have a low level of natural protection: the child’s eye pupil is wide, the lens is crystal clear, and moreover, they tend to look up more than adults. Children are at a greater risk of eye damage caused by excessive sunlight.
Do regular dark lenses protect babies’ eyes?
Eyes are not protected from sunlight simply by dark lenses but by UV protection. Wearing glasses with non-UV protective, simply dark-tinted lenses is extremely dangerous for the eyes, as the eye’s natural defense functions, such as squinting and contraction of the pupils, do not activate with dark lenses. Consequently, much more UV radiation reaches the eye than would without sunglasses.
