Do children need to wear sunglasses?
On hot, sunny summer days, special care must be taken to protect babies’ and children’s eyes from harmful sun exposure, as their eyes have low protective capacity: a child’s pupil is wide, the lens is crystal clear, and additionally, they look upwards more than adults. Children are at higher risk for sun-related eye damage.
Do regular dark lenses also protect babies’ eyes?
It is not the dark lens itself that protects eyes from sunlight, but UV protection. Wearing sunglasses with merely tinted lenses but no UV protection is extremely dangerous for the eyes, as the natural protective mechanisms of the eyes—squinting and pupil contraction—do not function with dark lenses. As a result, much more UV radiation can reach the eye than when not wearing sunglasses at all.
