Inserting a tampon with an applicator:
1. Wash your hands! Relax! Remove the tampon from the packaging.
2. Pull the smaller inner tube fully out so that it is still attached to the larger tube and the string is hanging out from the smaller, withdrawn tube.
3. Hold the lower part of the larger tube with your fingers and gently insert the applicator into the vagina—up to the point where your fingers touch the skin.
4. Still holding the larger tube, use one finger to push the smaller, previously withdrawn tube back inside until the bottoms of both tubes are aligned.
5. Remove the applicator. The tampon string will remain hanging outside the vagina.
Removing the tampon:
1. Wash your hands! Relax! Gently pull the string until the tampon comes out of the body.
2. If you can’t find the string, feel with your fingers to locate it.
3. Wrap the tampon in toilet paper and throw it in the trash.
NB! Before using tampons, please familiarize yourself with Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) is a rare but serious illness that can be fatal. TSS can occur in men, women, and children, and is caused by toxins produced by the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. The estimated rate of TSS is 1 to 17 cases per 100,000 menstruating women. Nearly 50% of TSS cases occur during menstruation, especially in women under 30. Menstrual TSS is associated with tampon use. You can reduce the risk of TSS by alternating tampon use with pads and/or using only pads.
Early recognition and treatment of TSS symptoms is important!
SYMPTOMS: TSS may develop during menstruation or shortly afterwards, and the symptoms can rapidly progress from flu-like to a serious and potentially fatal disease. The following symptoms may not all appear at the same time:
- fainting, dizziness, weakness.
- sudden high fever over 39°C
- muscle pain, headaches, sore throat
- sunburn-like rash
- diarrhea and/or vomiting
If you experience any of these symptoms, remove the tampon immediately and consult a doctor! Tell your doctor you have your period, use tampons, and are concerned about TSS. If you have previously had TSS, we recommend not using tampons again!
