Should babies wear sunglasses?
Babies’ and children’s eyes need extra protection from harmful sunlight on hot, sunny summer days, as their eyes have low natural defense: a child’s pupil is wider, the lens is crystal clear, and they tend to look upwards more than adults. Children are at greater risk of eye damage caused by excessive sun exposure.
Does a regular dark lens also protect babies’ eyes?
It is not the dark color of the lens but the UV protection that safeguards the eyes. Sunglasses with only tinted lenses and no UV protection are extremely hazardous to the eyes, as the eye’s natural defense mechanisms – squinting and pupil contraction – do not engage with a dark lens. As a result, much more UV radiation can reach the eye than if no sunglasses were worn at all.
