Should a baby wear sunglasses?
The eyes of babies and children must be especially protected from harmful solar radiation on hot sunny summer days because their eye protection capability is low: a child’s pupil is wide, the lens is crystal clear, and they look upwards more than adults. Children are at a higher risk of eye damage caused by excessive solar radiation.
Do ordinary dark sunglasses also protect babies’ eyes?
It is not the dark lens that protects the eyes from solar radiation, but the UV protection. Wearing sunglasses with just darkly colored lenses and no UV protection is extremely dangerous for the eyes because the eye’s natural defense mechanisms: squinting and pupil constriction, are not activated with dark lenses. As a result, much more UV radiation enters the eye than when not wearing sunglasses.
