Should a baby wear sunglasses?
The eyes of babies and children need to be especially protected against harmful sunlight on hot, sunny summer days because their eye protection capability is low: a child’s pupil is wide, the lens is crystal clear, and they also look more upwards than adults. Children have a higher risk of developing eye damage caused by excessive sun exposure.
Do regular dark lenses also protect babies’ eyes?
It’s not the dark lens that protects against sunlight, but the UV protection. Wearing glasses with dark-coated lenses without UV protection is extremely dangerous for the eyes because the eyes’ natural protection mechanisms: squinting and pupil constriction, do not function with dark lenses. Thus, much more UV radiation enters the eye than without sunglasses.
