Should babies wear sunglasses?
On hot, sunny summer days, babies’ and children’s eyes must be protected from harmful sunlight even more carefully, as their eyes have less natural protection: a child’s pupil is wider, their lens is crystal clear, and children tend to look upwards more often than adults. Children are at a greater risk of sun-induced eye damage.
Do regular dark sunglasses also protect babies’ eyes?
Eyes are not protected from sunlight by dark lenses alone, but by UV protection. Wearing sunglasses with tinted lenses but without UV protection is extremely dangerous for the eyes, as the eyes’ natural protective mechanisms—squinting and pupil constriction—do not activate behind dark lenses. As a result, the eyes are exposed to even more UV rays than if no sunglasses were worn at all.
