Should a baby wear sunglasses?
Babies and children’s eyes should be especially carefully protected from harmful sun radiation on a hot sunny summer day, as their eyes’ protective capability is low: a child’s eye pupil is wide, the lens crystal clear and moreover, they look more upwards than an adult. Children have a greater risk of developing sun-induced eye damage.
Does regular dark lenses also protect baby eyes?
The eyes are protected from sun radiation not by dark lenses but by UV protection. Wearing glasses with UV-unprotected, simply darkened lenses is extremely dangerous for the eyes, because the eye’s natural protective functions: squinting and pupil contraction, do not work with dark lenses. As a result, significantly more UV radiation enters the eye compared to being without sunglasses.
